The day is special because it was my first day on campus. We reached the venue at 11.30 sharp and little informal introductions started. The induction ceremony gave us a glimpse into the culture prevalent at SIMSREE. The ceremony started with the traditional lighting of the lamp. This symbolic gesture conveyed that at SIMSREE along with management a lot of importance is given to human values and principles. This was followed with a speech given by our Director, Mr. Dabli. He is an excellent orator and had us spellbound. His speech was truly inspiring and whatever little doubts one may have about the institute were dispelled after hearing him speak. He informed us about the qualities of a sydenhamite and spoke to us about his core values. An institution with such a dynamic leader at the top will surely excel. This was followed by speeches by a member of the faculty and Mr.Arvind Inamdar (must admit, one of the best speakers that I have ever heard). The induction gave us an insight into life at SIMSREE. If you feel that this was fun, read ahead!
The induction ceremony was followed by the ice breaker session. The seniors were supposed to address the concerns of the juniors and help them get acquainted with life @SIMSREE. But they certainly were not doing that. Every doubt that we asked was met by jeers, sly remarks and absolutely unexpected behavior. Some of us were asked to come on the stage and introduce ourselves this lead to some real leg pulling. Amidst all this a faculty member, Sachin Kulkarni, a young whiz who did his btech from IITB, MBA from FMS and was working as a consultant came to the venue. He spoke about discipline, manners chucked a senior out of the room and asked us to analyze and present a case in 10 minutes flat. When we presented our analysis the guy blasted us about our low standards and threatened to stop teaching at SIMSREE. What else could go wrong on the first day? The seniors came barging into the hall and started blaming us for all the wrong doing, we listened for some time but then some of the juniors lost their lid and an argument commenced between the juniors and the seniors. Just when things were getting out of hand, Ashutosh the chairperson of the SMA arrived and declared ‘Bakra’…. Everyone was stumped for a second and the next moment the whole hall erupted with laughter and celebrations. Guess what the professor Sachin was, a senior!! We were certainly taken by surprise! This was followed by a sincere interaction with the seniors who really did their best to make us comfortable. The chemistry between juniors and seniors at SIMSREE has to be seen to be believed. The seniors are extremely helpful and always approachable. All of the juniors are assigned a senior mentor who helps the juniors with acads, notes, CV’s etc. The atmosphere is hectic and friendly.

It has been a month since college has stated and it seems that I have already spent a term here. Life at SIMSREE has been a humbling and an enriching experience. It has been a humbling one because of the sheer variety of students we have here. You would find students from all streams of engineering and a large number of people have substantial work experience. It does become a cause of awe and anxiety for a fresher like yours truly.

We all have heard of B-schools located out of the city with lush green campuses and a huge building but can they match the location advantage enjoyed by us? SIMSREE is located in the heart of the city with Nariman Point, Ballard Pier, BSE and all bank HQs a stone's throw away. Of course there are lectures to attend, cases to be analyzed, assignments to be submitted (the deadlines are always too short) but something that makes SIMSREE truly different is that almost all activities are managed by the students and this offers a tremendous scope for self development.
